Let flowers bring out the creative artist in you as you develop their luscious color with the power and control of the colored pencil. Work from live flowers: sketch and draw, take reference photos, and concentrate on color, light, and shadow. Color formulas will be provided to get you started. Detailed and individual instruction will guide you in color application and development of the dramatic light and shadow effects that will make your work unique.
 
Thumbnail Sketching with Mixed Media

Just a very small sketchbook—with very small pages—not intimidating at all! Experiment with different kinds of color (watercolor, colored pencil, marker, ink, etc.), creative effects, try some quick sketches, experiment, draw what you see—and even what you don’t see! Most of all, just have fun! This is your very personal chronicle-- yours to treasure—or to share. It’s your choice!

Painting with Hot Colors of the Sonoran Desert

Work with the HOT COLORS of this beautiful desert and create a feeling . . . not a true representation of what color things really are Choose your favorite medium as you stay somewhat representational, and yet cut loose with color, creating something that is a little bit crazy, yet doesn’t make you feel like you have lost all control of the painting! Choose from, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, etc.
 
Scratchboard as Mixed Media- 5 Week Course

Explore a brand new way to use Scratchboard! In this 5 week course Rick Wheeler leads students through his approach to scratchboard as a mixed media. Learn to combine a scratchboard created with inks or watercolor with traditional oil painting techniques. Mix it up!
 
Scratching the Surface: Beginning Scratchboard

This introductory course to the art of scratchboard, this class will cover a variety of tools and a step-by-step approach for starting a scratchboard with beginners in mind in a welcoming atmosphere. If you like to draw, particularly detailed subjects, this is the class for you. With emphasis on contour drawing, the instructor will demonstrate the strokes one uses to create fur, feathers, landscapes and more. Some drawing experience is helpful, but not essential.

Getting Your Feet Wet: Beginning Watercolor

Drawing the Desert on Stone Tile

Try something new! With the desert of the Southwest as your inspiration, choose your subject and capture it in full color on tile. Using this special process, you can prepare the surface of any stone or tile to accept colored pencil. Detail and color building are easy and fun and your completed images will be unique and outstanding. Prepared 6” x 6” stone tiles will be available for purchase on the first day of the workshop.

It’s all about having fun while you relax and let yourself go. Learn some basic marker techniques and strokes, choose your own subjects, make designs or pictures. Experiment with color. Mini Landscapes in Colored Pencil & Watercolor

Colored pencil and watercolor partner to create a unique appearance unlike either medium alone. The alliance is perfect for vibrant—and controllable—color. Tint the paper with watercolor, then enhance and add details with colored pencil. Learn to evaluate and match color, then relax and work loosely to create a series of small landscapes, each glowing with color and rich with detail.
  
Colored Pencil on Toned Paper

Take advantage of the complete range of values you can create when you apply colored pencil to tan or grey paper. Now you can use white and light-colored pencils to create bright highlights—then create vibrant mixes with all the other colors in your pencil set. The toned paper enhances every color! Work in a medium-sized sketchbook and concentrate on a series of small compositions or studies inspired by the desert subjects around you.
 
Give & Take: Lifting & Layering in Watercolor

It can be overwhelming to do a painting that includes many watercolor techniques, but this class will be concentrating on just two of them. We will be working with pigments that lift easily, are granulating, and create wonderful neutrals that give the richness of carved stone. We will loosely layer on color in some areas, and in other areas we will carefully remove the pigment, leaving soft edges, creating a rich illusion of depth.

There are a lot of new products available that open the door wide to let you really express your creativity. Come learn about some of those products, procedures, and design elements, and share your vision with others in an open fun environment.
