Silk Painting: Yes You Can!

Discover the art of silk painting in this 2-day workshop. Explore professional silk dyes, how to mix, apply and set the dye using two traditional techniques: The Arashi Shibori technique (wrap fabric on a pole to create a design), and the Serti method (paint directly on stretched fabric for intricate paintings.) With tons of personalized instruction, this class is perfect for the non-artist or experienced artist looking for something new! All supplies included in the fee for 2 silk scarves.

Join Photographer Jay Pierstorff and ADSM Curator Shawnee Riplog-Peterson for this two-day Summer photo event. Start early in the morning when many of the Museum’s animals are active as Jay and Shawnee set up photo ops for great animal photos outdoors. Go behind the scenes and see how the animals live at the Desert Museum. As the morning heats up, we move inside to photograph live animals on plain backgrounds in a studio setting including rattlesnakes and Gila monsters. Learn about tethered shooting directly to your computer. Continuous lights, and depth of field for close ups.
 
One Day to Your Own Website (with Take Home Video Lessons)

Nature Journaling: All Things Spiny

This laid back class is created for the beginner. Led by an expert nature artist, you will explore the many extraordinary forms of cactus in the desert southwest and gain a greater appreciation for their iconic beauty. You will become more familiar with the amazing diversity, adaptations, and life history of cactus while putting together an informal botanical scrapbook to illustrate your discoveries using a variety of techniques, including sketching, watercolor paintings, and the written word. A portion of the time will be spent on the museum grounds visually and verbally recording what you see and learn.

Try out a fabulous surface design technique using professional dyes taught by a professional textile artist. Or, if you are a returning participant use this workshop to perfect your shibori and color theory skills and take advantage of the studio set up. This popular silk design technique promises success for everyone. All materials for 2 scarves provided. If time allows, additional scarves are available for purchase. No art experience necessary.
 
MACRO Live

Bringing macro photography to the screen! This workshop will demonstrate how macro lenses "SEE" the subject vs non macro lenses. The instructor will demonstrate advantages and disadvantages, show participants how to set up a shot and discuss the difficulties that may occur. You will also have time to use your camera on the museum grounds followed by a feedback session.

Prerequisite: Experience in one of Holly’s silk workshops or proven experience outside of ASDM. Hand painting with professional dyes can be an exciting way to create wearable art or art for the wall using a popular fiber technique. All supplies are included to create one silk scarf or multiple small pieces depending on your individual pace. This one-day workshop is designed for the participant who already understands and has work with steam set silk dyes. Advanced serti method techniques will be covered in this workshop.
